Open AI Announces Sora: Text-To-Video Generator
At the beginning of 2024, each team member of Zellus gave their prediction on AI advancements for the year. Although 2023 was an incredibly jaw-dropping year for AI advancements, most of us agreed that 2024 could possibly be a bit slower of a year for AI progress. Fast forward to the month of February, and we are all glad we did not put money on our prediction. On February 15th, Sam Altman and Open AI announced their new text-to-video generator Sora. It is potentially the biggest AI news release since November 2022, when Chat GPT was released.
What is Sora?
Sora is a text-to-video generator that is capable of creating videos up to 60 seconds based on written prompts as short as one sentence using generative AI. It is even capable of turning a still image into a video. This is not the first AI tool that is capable of creating video, Pika Labs and RunwayML are examples of companies that have already provided a tool similar to Sora. However, Sora has put the whole industry on notice with the stunning quality of its videos. It is Jaw-dropping. Sam Altman and Open AI continue to strive to be the head captain of the AI world. Sora isn’t available for public use yet as of February 2024, but Open AI claims to be testing it with a group of policymakers and artists.
Example of Sora
If you take a minute and go view the videos publicly displayed on the Open AI website, You will understand why this is monumental. A close-to-realistic movie trailer was generated from the simple prompt: “A movie trailer featuring the adventures of the 30-year-old spaceman wearing a red wool knitted motorcycle helmet, blue sky, salt desert, cinematic style, shot on 35mm film, vivid colors.” Sam Altman being the guy that he is, even went to X and asked for people to give prompt examples so he could show what Sora is capable of. Internet celebrity Mr. Beast asked for a monkey playing chess in a park, and Sora delivered. The videos aren’t 100% perfect, but it is still scary how quickly AI has evolved since the release of Chat GPT.
The Potential Risks with Sora and Generative AI
Anxiety over the ethical and societal implications of AI-generated video is at an all-time. As of now, the government is still playing catch up with figuring out how to make these AI tools not cause harm in any way. But they are working on it. Open AI and other tech companies have stated they are working on safety and security procedures for these tools as well. As the 2024 election is on the horizon, this topic will most likely be debated. Using tools like Sora or any AI-generated video to display a false or harmful narrative on social media is a big concern. There have already been cases where AI has been used in a negative way. These are concerns we all have when it comes to AI.
What Should I do as a Business Owner
It is safe to say that AI is here to stay. Whether you are pro-AI or anti-AI, it is going to be apart of our lives in some form. Sora is another example of why it is important to stay informed on AI. The best thing to do is to just control what you can control. Ignoring AI and hoping it goes away or gets banned is not ideal. Will AI take your job? Will your competitors use AI? These are questions most of us have. The only thing you can control is staying ahead of your competition and beginning to understand and Implement AI ETHICALLY in your business.
AI won’t take your job, people who know how to use AI will take your job. As of now, AI can not do things humans can in certain aspects of work. AI will be used to replace tasks, not people. These are things to think about going forward with your business. There is still time to make sure you are ready. Set some time aside each week to look into how you can begin learning and using AI ethically in your business. Check out “The Trust Framework” to learn a framework of how you can ethically implement AI within your organization. Your future self will most likely thank you for not ignoring AI.
